MOBILE, Ala. (10/14/25) – The Arkansas State football team (3-4, 2-1 SBC) trailed by two points with three seconds remaining at South Alabama (1-6, 0-3 SBC), but Clune Van Andel converted a 38-yard field goal as time expired to secure the 15-14 victory on Tuesday night at Hancock Whitney Stadium.

Kyle Taylor led the Red Wolves’ defense with 14 tackles while Aaron Alexander also reached double-digits with 10. Ethan Hassler and Demarcus Hendricks accounted for one sack apiece and the team tallied six tackles for loss.

Jaylen Raynor converted 29 passes on 45 attempts for 209 yards, posting one touchdown with a pass to Hunter Summers. Raynor also spearheaded A-State’s ground attack, recording a team-high 76 yards on 14 carries.

As a team, the Red Wolves recorded 367 yards of total offense and finished 3-for-3 on fourth-down conversions. The A-State defense limited South Alabama to 293 yards of total offense, 118 through the air, and 4-of-14 on third down conversions.

The Jaguars struck first on a 75-yard drive consisting of nine plays, reaching the endzone at the 2:50 mark on a nine-yard rush from Kentrel Bullock. The Red Wolves accumulated 64 yards of total offense in the opening 15 minutes, but trailed 7-0 as the clock hit 0:00.

A roughing-the-passer penalty breathed new life into A-State’s first drive of the second quarter, moving the ball to the South Alabama 10 yard-line. Van Andel ended the scoreless stretch with a 25-yard field goal and cut the deficit to four points with 12:39 remaining in the first half.

Trailing 7-3 at the break, A-State’s first drive of the third quarter featured 15 plays for a total of 69 yards, but the 28-yard field goal attempt was blocked. South Alabama forced a turnover later in the quarter to set up a drive that culminated in a 27-yard touchdown run at the 1:34 mark, making the score 14-3.

Momentum shifted to the Red Wolves in the fourth quarter, starting with a 37-yard field goal from Van Andel with 10:43 to go. A three-and-out put the ball back in A-State’s possession and Raynor opened the drive with a 42-yard run to the Jaguars’ six yard-line. Raynor completed a touchdown pass to Summers on the ensuing play, but a failed two-point conversion attempt left the deficit at two points.

South Alabama drained 6:01 off the clock and made it to the Red Wolves’ 11 yard-line, but the 29-yard field goal attempt sliced wide right at the 1:50 mark. Raynor completed four consecutive passes for 32 yards and rushed for 23 more over 1:29 to reach Jaguar territory.

The Red Wolves gained five more yards and called timeout with three seconds remaining, setting up a 38-yard attempt for Van Andel. The junior landed his 10th field goal of the season between the uprights as time expired to give A-State their first lead of the night.
