AUBURN, Ala. (5/13/25) –Thomas Schmidt set a program record 36-hole total for an Arkansas State men’s golfer at a NCAA Regional as he stands tied for eighth at 2-under par 142 with two rounds complete at the Auburn University Club.
Following a first round even-par 72, Schmidt was two strokes better Tuesday carding a 2-under par 70 despite the course average being 74.63. Schmidt’s 2-under par 142 is the program best on a par-72 course and equals the even-par 142 Jake Lile had at the University of Texas Golf Club’s par-71 course last season in NCAA Regional play. Tied for eighth individually, Schmidt eyes joining Zan Luka Stirn (Noblesville, 2021) as the only A-State players to finish inside the top 10 at a NCAA Regional.
Claes Borregaard of Kennseaw State holds the individual lead at 8-under par 136. Jackson Koivun (-7), Brendan Valdes (-6) and Carson Bacha (-6) of Auburn round out the top three while UCLA’s Omar Morales (-5), New Mexico State’s Aidan Thomas (-4), Georgia Tech’s Hiroshi Tai (-4), Texas A&M’s Phichaksn Maichon (-2) and College of Charleston’s Kieron Van Wyk (-2) complete the top eight and ties individually. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals.
Schmidt once again had three birdies on his card, sinking birdie putts on the par-4 second, the par-5 13th and the par-4 15th. His only blemish was a bogey on the par-4 12th. Jack Maxey, also playing as an individual, wrapped up his second round tied for 63rd at 9-over par. Maxey rolled in three birdies, had five bogeys and a triple-bogey on his 5-over par 77 second round.
Schmidt and Maxey represent the seventh and eighth A-State men’s golfers to ever compete as individuals at an NCAA Regional. This is the first time the Red Wolves have had multiple individual qualifiers in the same season. It is the third consecutive season and seventh time over the last eight NCAA postseason competitions the Red Wolves are represented.
The final round of the NCAA Regional at the Auburn University Club begins at 7:30 a.m. Jack Maxey is set to tee off on the first hole at 9:20 a.m. while Schmidt will be in the final group with a tee time of 10:04 a.m. off the first tee. Live scoring is available on Scoreboard.
