CHANDLER, Ariz. (9/9/25) – Posting the fourth-lowest 54-hole total in program history, the Arkansas State men’s golf team opened its season with a second-place finish at the Whirlwind Invitational played at Whirlwind Golf Club.
A-State carded a second consecutive 11-under par 277 to wrap up the tournament at 40-under par 824. It marks the lowest 54-hole total in program history in an event outside of Jonesboro and fourth-lowest overall. Host USC won the team title at 52-under par 812 with UTEP (-39), New Mexico State (-29), Stetson (-25) and James Madison (-25) rounding out the top five teams and ties in the 12-team field.
Thomas Schmidt and Chris Somerfield paced the Red Wolves as the pair were tied for eighth individually at 10-under par 206. Somerfield had the low round for A-State players on Tuesday at 4-under par 68 while Schmidt finished out the tournament with a 2-under par 70. Jake Wallis tied for 11th at 8-under par 208 and Milan Reed tied for 16th with a total of 7-under par 209. Jake Lile tied for 18th at 6-under par 210 and Viggo Hed tied for 52nd at 4-over par 220.
A-State returns to action September 19-20 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate played at the University of New Mexico Championship Course.
