AUSTIN, Texas (5/14/24) – Matching its opening round and tying the program-best mark for an NCAA Championship round, the Arkansas State men’s golf team is 10th among 13 teams at the NCAA Austin Regional following a second round 3-over par 287 at the University of Texas Golf Club Tuesday.

The Red Wolves own a program-best 36-hole total at a NCAA Championship at 6-over par 574, 11 strokes better than the previous best set in the 2019 NCAA Louisville Regional.  A-State dropped three spots in the team standings to 10th and three strokes from the top five, but are just six strokes off the cut line entering the final round Wednesday.

Host Texas maintained the lead and enters the final round at 22-under par 546 followed by Notre Dame (-12), Notre Dame (-1), BYU (-6) and Utah (E) in the top five. Wake Forest (+2), Georgia (+3), Arkansas (+4), UNC Greensboro (+5) and A-State (+6) are all within striking distance of cracking the top five. The top five teams after 54 holes advance to the NCAA Championship May 24-29 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. Kansas City (+21), Grand Canyon (+22) and San Jose State (+22) round out the 13-team field.

Tying for the fourth-lowest individual round at a NCAA Championship in program history, freshman Jake Lile posted a 3-under par 68 to move up 29 spots on the individual leaderboard to a tie for 20th. His card featured a birdie on the first and ninth, a bogey on the 11th and back-to-back birdies on No. 14 and No. 15. Lile’s round was just shy of Zan Luka Stirn’s back-to-back 66’s at the 2021 NCAA Noblesville Regional, Jason Jackson’s 67 in the final round of the 2000 NCAA Central Regional and tied with Wixson Hufstetler’s 68 at the 2002 NCAA Central Regional.

Thomas Schmidt and Devyn Pappas carded 1-over par 72 for the second round. Schmidt enters the final round at 1-over par and tied for 25th while Pappas is tied for 37th at 2-over par. Jack Maxey registered a 4-over par 75 and is tied for 58th overall at 7-over par while Hugo Ronnberg finished his second round at 5-over par and is tied for 45th at 4-over par.

A-State begins its final round Wednesday at 8:55 a.m. off No. 10. The Red Wolves are grouped with Kansas City and Grand Canyon. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
