JONESBORO, Ark. (2/4/24) – Butler edge the Arkansas State women’s tennis team 4-2 in a tightly-contested Sunday afternoon match at the RidgePointe Tennis Center.
Butler (5-2) took the doubles point with wins on courts one and two grabbing an early 1-0 lead in the match. The A-State (3-3) pair of Rebecca Brody and Abigail Thurmer lost on court two 6-3 and the duo of Yasmine Humbert and Sarah Millard fell 6-3 on court one. Anna Grigoreva and Emiliya Margolin trailed 4-3 on court three when the point was clinched.
Making her collegiate debut, Grigoreva cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Chase Metcalf on court three to even the match at 1-1. After dropping the first set 6-0 against Delaney Schurhamer on court two, Millard dropped a tightly contest second set 7-5 as Butler grabbed a 2-1 advantage. Humbert took a first set tiebreak 8-6 and went on to win 7-6, 6-3 on court one against Natalie Boesing to even the tally at 2-2. Brody fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 to Norah Balthazor on court four and Elle Martin edged Margolin 6-2, 6-3 on court six to clinch the match. Ariadna Fernandez led 6-2, 3-4 on court five when Butler clinched the match.
The Red Wolves return to action Friday, February 16, against Arkansas Tech. First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m. at the RidgePointe Tennis Center.
