AUBURN, Ala. (5/12/25) – Arkansas State junior Thomas Schmidt and senior Jack Maxey began play Monday at the NCAA Regional golf tournament at the Auburn University Club.
Schmidt turned in an even-par 72 to place him tied for 20th while Maxey shot a first-round 76 to place him tied for 63rd. Among eight other individuals selected to compete in the regional, Schmidt is four strokes back of Aidan Thomas (-4) of New Mexico State and Claes Borregaaard (-4) of Kennesaw State, the highest individuals not on one of the top five teams in the current standings. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals.
Schmidt carded three birdies on the round, coming on the par-5 third, the par-5 seventh and the par-5 13th to offset three bogeys on his round. Maxey birdied the par-5 13th but had three bogeys and a double-bogey on his 4-over par 76 round.
Schmidt and Maxey represent the seventh and eighth A-State men’s golfers to ever compete as individuals at an NCAA Regional. This is the first time the Red Wolves have had multiple individual qualifiers in the same season.
Round two of the NCAA Regional in Auburn will begin at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday. Maxey is set to tee off on hole one at 9:20 a.m. while Schmidt begins at the first hole with a tee time of 9:53 a.m. Live scoring is available on Scoreboard.
