JONESBORO, Ark. (2/25/24) – Arkansas State Baseball (8-0, 0-0 SBC) was trailing by a run against Lindenwood (1-6, 0-0 OVC) in the 11th, but a late rally capped off by Blake Burris’ walk-off single lifted the Red Wolves to a 6-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.
Dylan Heine made his second start of the season for the Scarlet and Black, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out one over four innings pitched. Burris and Daedrick Cail led the bats, finishing with three hits apiece along with three combined RBIs.
After the first two batters were retired, Lindenwood put runners on base in the next four at-bats, including back-to-back HBPs that put a run on the board. Cross Jumper made a diving catch in left field to get out of the bases-loaded jam with minimal damage.
After Wil French advanced to third base on a pair of groundouts, Cail sent one to left-center to tie the game. Cason Campbell landed a blooper in left field during the next at-bat to give the Red Wolves a 2-1 lead.
The Lions tied it up in the top of the third after Dawson Hokuf reached home plate following a fielding error in right field.
Both sides went quiet for the next seven frames with no runs scored and no hits recorded. Lindenwood broke the scoreless stretch when Chase Honeycutt scored on a wild pitch, putting the Scarlet and Black down 3-2 going into the final stretch.
The Lions extended their lead to two runs in the eighth after Mitch Cummins scored on a sacrifice fly from Dawson Hokuf. The Red Wolves broke their scoreless stretch in the bottom frame following an RBI-single from Cason Tollett and an RBI-double from Cail.
Neither side was able to score from there as the game went into extra innings.
Tyson Ludwig scored on a throwing error in the top of the 11th to give Lindenwood a 5-4 advantage. Aidan Houseworth tied the game after sending a grounder into right field for an RBI-single.
With runners on first and second, Burris got one to land in right field, allowing Houseworth to score and end the game.
Jake Henry Williams (1-0) earned the win while Jett Jackson (0-1) took the loss. A-State has swept three consecutive series dating back to last season, which last happened during the 2011 and 2012 campaigns.
