AZUSA, Calif./LONG BEACH, Calif. (4/11/24) – Arkansas State track and field opened an action-filled weekend of competition on Thursday, competing on the West Coast at the Bryan Clay Invitational and Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
Three athletes registered marks which rank among the program’s all-time top-10 on Thursday.
In Azusa at the Bryan Clay Invitational, freshman Miranda Burgett finished the first day of the heptathlon in third place with 3,248 points, while Izzy Daines was 15th with 2,742. Burgett won the high jump portion, clearing 1.76m (5-9.25) for 928 points to move up to ninth in school history. She opened with a career-best time of 14.59 in the 100-meter hurdles, while Daines ran a season-best 14.81.
Cash Kunkel finished 39th in the men’s steeplechase, running 9:06.90, while Elizabeth Martin ran a season-best 10:49.64 in the women’s race, placing 49th.
At the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (PCI) in Long Beach, Menachem Chen moved to ninth in school history in the men’s discus, tossing the implement 53.89m (176-9) in Long Beach. Noa Isaia recorded a throw of 51.89m (170-3) and Chris Boyd had a mark of 50.63m (166-1).
Michelle Ogbemudia moved up to fifth in school history in the women’s hammer throw, hurling 54.55m (178-11).
Selase Sampram finished fifth in the women’s shot put with a throw of 15.37m (50-5.25) and Nyaluet Diew threw 13.44m (44-1.25) to place 23rd. Sampram threw a season-best 48.55m (159-3) in an 11th-place finish while Liya Guy placed 27th with a throw of 44.49m (145-11).
Willem Coertzen placed 14th in the men’s shot put at the PCI, throwing a distance of 17.21m (56-5.75). Chen threw 15.91m (52-2.5) and Boyd notched a mark of 15.15m (49-8.5).
Kenyon Parker placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles, with Josh Jones finishing 18th, running wind-aided times of 14.04 and 14.39.
In the long jump, Alexis Taylor leaped a personal-best 5.88m (19-3.5) to place 17th in the women’s event, while Amarrion Reese was 41st with a jump of 6.68m (21-11.0) in the men’s competition.
Reneisha Andrews clocked a wind-aided time of 11.94 to place 17th in the women’s 100 meters, while Alden Wetzel ran a personal-best 10.91 in the men’s race.
Trace South tied for 23rd in the men’s pole vault, clearing 4.71m (15-5.5).
