CONWAY, S.C. (4/7/24) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team suffered a 6-1 defeat at Coastal Carolina Sunday.
A-State (7-12, 1-7 Sun Belt) fell short in the doubles point and Coastal Carolina (12-6, 6-2 Sun Belt) won five of six singles courts to set the final margin. The Chanticleers secured victories on courts one and three to secure the doubles point. Yasmine Humbert and Sarah Millard were dealt a 6-3 setback, but Anna Grigoreva and Abigail Thurmer took a 6-3 win on court two. Coastal Carolina clinched the point in a back-and-fort match on court three with Rebecca Brody and Nejla Zukic coming up short 7-5.
Coastal Carolina took a 2-0 lead with Cecile Morin topping Brody 6-2, 6-2 on court five and Jesse Hollins came out on top against Zukic on court three 6-1, 6-4 making it 3-0. Ariadna Fernandez played on court six, but Aida Maria Mitrache clinched the match topping Fernandez 6-0, 6-4. Grigoreva and Anna Babayan battled to a tiebreak in the first set with Babayan prevailing 10-8, but Grigoreva took the second set 6-4. Babayan took the third set tiebreak to clinch the battle, but Yasmine Humber prevailed in a tiebreak against Nicole Abel to win on court one 7-6 (7), 6-2.
A-State plays its final two road matches of the season next weekend at Georgia State (April 13) and Troy (April 14). Senior day is April 20 against Southern Miss at the A-State Tennis Courts.
