TROY, Ala. (4/5/24) – Arkansas State baseball (16-16, 3-7 SBC) fell behind early and could not recover, falling to Troy (21-11, 5-5 SBC) by a score of 14-0 (7) on Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
Jelle van der Lelie (2-4) made his eighth start of the season, surrendering six runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out five more over 3.1 innings pitched. Allen Grier and Jared Toler recorded the only hits for A-State with three more batters reaching on walks.
Troy struck with four runs in the first two innings, starting with a sacrifice fly from Will Butcher. Kole Myers and Peyton Watts added with a pair of RBI-knocks before Ethan Kavanagh cleared the bases with a two-run single.
Blake Sutton recorded the second sacrifice fly of the game during the fourth inning, giving Troy a 6-0 advantage going into the fifth. The Trojans padded their lead in the fifth by scoring five runs on four hits, a sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch, extending their lead to 11.
Sutton batted in another run after doubling to shortstop in the sixth while Watts scored on a dropped fly in left field to move ahead 14-0 entering the seventh.
The Red Wolves put two runners on base, but none would score as the run rule went into effect. Luke Lyon (4-1) earned the win after pitching a complete game while van der Lelie took the loss.
