JONESBORO, Ark. (3/30/24) – Playing in front of a record crowd at the A-State Tennis Courts for Family Fun Fest, the Arkansas State women’s team attempted to rally from a 3-1 deficit, but fell 5-2 short to James Madison Saturday afternoon.
James Madison (8-7, 4-2 Sun Belt) took the doubles point to take an early lead in the match. Nejla Zukic and Rebecca Brody came up short 6-1 on court three, but Yasmine Humbert and Sarah Millard picked up a 6-4 win on court one to even the doubles tally. Abigail Thurmer and Anna Grigoreva battled, but fell 6-3 on court two as JMU clinched the doubles point.
JMU took a 2-0 lead with Zukic falling 6-2, 6-1 on court three against Catherine Broerman, but Sarah Millard got A-State (7-10, 1-5 Sun Belt) on the board with a court four win 6-4, 6-3 against Hope Moulin. Grigoreva fell 6-4, 6-2 on court against Ines Oliveira as JMU’s lead grew to 3-1. Arianda Fernandez got A-State within one with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 triumph on court six. JMU clinched the match by way of Daria Munteanu topping Humbert 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 on court one and Brody lost a third set tiebreak against Reka Matko 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5).
A-State hits the road to face Georgia Southern Friday at 11:00 a.m. (CT) in Statesboro, Ga.
