HARRISONBURG, Va. (5/5/24) – Arkansas State baseball (20-26-1, 7-16-1 SBC) was locked in a one-run ballgame late against James Madison (28-19, 13-11 SBC) before the Dukes pulled away for a 9-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.

Dylan Heine made his 12th start of the season, surrendering four earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one over 5.1 innings pitched. As a team, A-State recorded only five hits with Allen Grier recording the only RBI.

Jason Schiavone put the Dukes ahead in the first inning after sending a grounder up the middle for an RBI-single.

Jared Toler advanced home on a wild pitch to even the game at one run apiece in the next frame. The Red Wolves loaded the bases with one out on the board, but none would reach home as the score remained 1-1.

Jacob Steinberg put James Madison back in front during the bottom of the second after doubling to right center. Both teams went silent over the next seven frames, but JMU managed to pull away in the bottom of the seventh.

Back-to-back bases-loaded walks extended the Dukes lead to three before Fenwick Tremble delivered a grand slam to the road behind left field. Mike Mancini crushed a solo-shot to right field in the next at-bat and put the Red Wolves behind 9-1 after six innings.

Grier broke the Scarlet and Black’s scoring drought in the seventh, bringing Hunter Ryan home on a fielder’s choice.

Neither side would score again as A-State dropped the series in a seven-run decision. Max Kuhle (5-4) earned the win while Dylan Heine (2-2) took the loss.
