JONESBORO, Ark. (4/20/24) – Arkansas State baseball (17-22, 4-13 SBC) struggled to keep App State (22-14, 8-9 SBC) off the scoreboard on Saturday evening, falling by a score of 12-3 at Tomlinson Stadium.

Kole Turner made his fifth start and 12th appearance of the season, surrendering six earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four more over 4.2 innings pitched. On the flip side, Hunter Ryan accounted for all three runs scored after finishing 2-for-3 at the plate with a three-run homer.

After leading off with a flyout in the opening frame, the Mountaineers took an early 2-0 advantage on a two-run homer from Banks Tolley.

Ryan responded in the bottom of the second, sending a three-run rocket over the left-field wall to put A-State back in front. Tolley struck again with another two-run shot in the next frame to give App State a 4-3 advantage going into the fourth.

Drew Holderbach created momentum in the fifth for App State after landing an RBI-double to left field. The Mountaineers loaded the bases later in the top frame, but scored only one run on an RBI-groundout.

A fielding error at shortstop allowed Austin St. Laurent to score uncontested before the Mountaineers blew the game open. With two outs and the bases loaded, Xavier Moronta landed a shot in left center to clear the bags and make the score 10-3.

St. Laurent recorded his first RBI of the contest in the seventh after tripling to the wall in right center. A sacrifice fly from Holderbach put the 10th unanswered run on the board as the Red Wolves trailed 12-3 going into the final stretch.

A-State recorded their first hit in 3.2 innings during the bottom of the ninth, but it would not be enough as they fell by nine runs. Jackson Steensma (5-2) earned the win while Turner took the loss as the Scarlet and Black drop the series.
