MONTEREY, Calif. (10/20/25) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team carded a 9-under par 279 to lead host Saint Mary’s by five strokes after the first round of play at Bayonet Golf Club.
A-State notched its 11th rounder under par of the season through 13 rounds, extending its streak to seven straight. The Red Wolves, ranked 41st in the initial national collegiate golf rankings, lead Saint Mary’s (-4) by five while Fresno State (-3), Texas State (-2), San Francisco (-1) and Long Beach State (-1) complete the top five and ties.
Thomas Schmidt paced the field with a 6-under par 66, his ninth round this season in the 60s and 11th par or better round. His clean scorecard featured six birdies on the day giving him 75 for the season in 13 rounds played. Schmidt leads Sam Renner of Washington State by one stroke while Avery Lazarski of Saint Mary’s and Oak Seelanagae of Nevada are two shots back of the individual lead.
A-State features five players in the top 30 with each shooting 1-over par or better on the opening round. Jake Wallis and Milan Reed are among seven players tied for ninth at 2-under par 70. Chris Somerfield and Jake Lile are among 11 players tied for 30th at 1-over par 73. Playing as an individual, Cole Kirby is tied for 50th at 3-over par 75.
