JONESBORO, Ark. (3/28/24) – Arkansas State baseball (15-13, 2-5 SBC) was unable to overcome early miscues as they fell to Georgia Southern (13-12, 4-3 SBC) by a score of 6-2 on Thursday night at Tomlinson Stadium.
Collin Maloney made his seventh start of the season, surrendering two runs (none earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out two more over four innings pitched. Three players recorded multiple hits in the contest, with Blake Burris being the only one to record an RBI.
Jake Henry Williams put together a strong relief performance after allowing no hits or runs and striking out two over 2.0 innings pitched.
With one out and the bases loaded, the Eagles struck first on an RBI-groundout from Kent Schmidt in the third inning. The Red Wolves had a runner at third with one out in the following frame, but an inning-ending double play kept the score at 1-0 going into the fourth.
Two errors by A-State resulted in Josh Tate reaching home uncontested as Georgia Southern extended their lead to two runs in the inning. The Scarlet and Black’s fourth error came in the fifth, advancing Jarrett Brown to third and allowing him to score on a single from Sean White.
Burris fired a bullet down the right field line for an RBI-double but Brayden Caskey would be thrown out at the plate. The last runner would be stranded in scoring position as the Red Wolves trailed 3-1.
Daedrick Cail cut the deficit to one run in the bottom of the sixth after hitting a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Eagles got the run back in the next frame with an RBI-triple from Daniel Haab while Cade Parker followed with a grounder down the left-field line for an RBI-double. Tate knocked in a third run with a single up the middle, making the score 6-2 going into the eighth.
Neither side would add to their totals beyond that point as Georgia Southern took the four-run victory. Ben Johnson (2-2) earned the win and Jacob Phillips claimed the save while Maloney took the loss.
The four errors by A-State set a new season high, surpassing the previous high of three which was set in the season opener against Omaha and matched in a 14-12 victory over Missouri State on 3/2.
