SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (3/3/24) – Arkansas State baseball (9-3, 0-0 SBC) surrendered 14 unanswered runs in a 15-5 defeat at Missouri State (6-5, 0-0 MVC) on Sunday afternoon at Hammons Field.
Dylan Heine made his third start of the season and allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out two over 3.1 innings pitched. Daedrick Cail brought in three RBIs during the contest and finished 1-for-3 on the day.
After retiring the Red Wolves in order to start the game, Missouri State put the first run on the board with a solo-home run from leadoff batter Cody Kelly. A-State promptly responded one frame later in the form of a three-run blast from Cail to take a 3-1 advantage.
Cross Jumper and Wil French added to the lead with a pair of RBI-knocks in the top of the fourth. Jahlani Rogers cut the Bears’ deficit to one after sending a three-run homer over the left-field wall while Tyler Epstein crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly.
With two runners on base, Zack Stewart crushed a three-run homer past right field to put Missouri State ahead 8-5 going into the fifth.
The Bears scored another run following a fielding error at shortstop to make the score 9-5. Caden Bogenpohl found the gap in right center for a two-run double as A-State fell behind by six runs.
Stewart opened the bottom of the sixth with a solo-shot beyond the right-field wall while Jake McCutcheon recorded a solo-homer of his own a few at-bats later. After six innings of play, Missouri State led by a score of 13-5.
The Red Wolves surrendered their fourth consecutive multi-run inning in the seventh after allowing one from a groundout by Bogenpohl and another from a single by Stewart.
Neither side would score a run from there, as A-State drops their first series of the season. Kaleb Thomas (2-1) earned the win and Tyler Charlton claimed the save while Jalen Martinez (0-1) took the loss.
