    BOONE, N.C. (3/1/24) – Arkansas State men’s basketball concluded the regular season Friday night, dropping an 80-57 decision at league-leading Appalachian State inside the Holmes Convocation Center.

    A-State (16-15, 11-7 SBC) could not overcome a late first-half surge by the Mountaineers (26-5, 16-2), who won the rebounding battle, 48-38.

    Taryn Todd and Avery Felts led the Red Wolves in scoring with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Derrian Ford and Izaiyah Nelson had seven, with Nelson grabbing 10 rebounds. A-State shot 35.3 percent from the field on 24-of-68, including 5-of-26 (19.2 percent) from deep, while forcing 10 Mountaineer turnovers.

    App State had four double-figure scorers, led by 15 points apiece from Donovan Gregory and Tre’Von Spillers, who also hauled in 15 boards. CJ Huntley tallied 12 points and Terence Harcum accounted for 10. As a team, the Mountaineers shot at a 49.3-percent clip (31-63), going 8-for-17 (47.1 percent) from 3-point range and hitting 10-of-12 from the foul stripe.

    The Mountaineers struck first and built a quick double-digit lead, but A-State rallied to within 3 when a Nelson slam sparked a 5-0 run that cut the deficit to 22-19. App State answered with a 10-0 run, which Fields broke up with a driving layup. The hosts led by as much as 16 in the half and led 43-29 at the break.

    Momentum seesawed early in the second half, with A-State cutting an 18-point deficit down to 13, but the Mountaineers managed to expand their lead out to as much as 24 in the final 20 minutes. The Red Wolves closed their scoring with a 5-0 run before App State ended the contest with a pair of scores.

    NEXT UP

    Arkansas State now turns its focus to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which begins March 5 in Pensacola, Fla. The Red Wolves, which earned the No. 4 seed and double-bye to the quarterfinal round, will open tourney play at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, against an opponent to be determined in the prior round. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN Plus while the radio broadcast can be heard across the EAB Red Wolves Sports Network as well as the A-State Athletics mobile app.
