MOBILE, Ala. (4/14/24) – Arkansas State baseball (17-20, 4-11 SBC) was engaged in a stalemate against South Alabama (20-16, 6-9 SBC), but late runs resulted in a 3-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field.
 
Dylan Heine made his ninth start of the season, surrendering one earned run on five hits and a walk while striking out three over 6.0 innings pitched. The Righty turned in his second quality start of the year, which leads the team.
 
The Scarlet and Black recorded only two hits in the contest, but Allen Grier led the way with a home run.
 
The Jaguars struck quickly, using a solo-homer from Brennan Holt to take a 1-0 lead into the second inning. A-State responded in the bottom of the third when Grier fired a solo-blast to left center and tied the game at one run apiece.
 
Both sides went silent for the next eight frames with South Alabama recording the only three hits over that span.
 
Ethan Melton led off with a triple in the bottom of the seventh before scoring on a passed ball. Rett Johnson laid down a sacrifice bunt two at-bats later, allowing Tyler Borges to score as the Jaguars took a 3-1 lead into the eighth.
 
Cade Tucker fired a leadoff single up the middle in the ninth, but it would not be enough as A-State dropped the series. Gant Starling (4-1) earned the win and Grant Wood claimed the save while Max Charlton (2-2) took the loss.
