
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (5/25/22) – Seven members of the Arkansas State men’s track and field team competed on the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on Wednesday, held at the John McDonnell Track.
A-State’s Aimar Palma Simo finished just outside of the top 12, placing 13th with a throw of 64.57m (211-10.0).
Also finishing just outside the top 12 was Bradley Jelmert, who tied for 13th in the men’s pole vault with a clearance of 5.29m (17-4.25). Trace South also competed, finishing tied for 35th with a mark of 4.89m (16-0.5).
Carter Shell placed 22nd in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.53m (24-8.5) on his final jump.
Ke’Von Holder and Will Glass competed in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles, but finished just shy of the top 24 to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals. Holder placed 26th with a season-best mark of 13.97 while Glass followed in 27th with a time of 13.98.
In the first round of the men’s 800 meters, Seth Waters finished 29th overall with a time of 1:49.94.
On Thursday, Grace Flowers opens the day in the women’s hammer throw at 10 a.m. before Sun Belt javelin champion throws her implement at 2 p.m. Two-time SBC runner-up Evangelynn Harris will compete in the women’s shot put later in the day, set for a 7 p.m. start time.
On the track, a pair of Sun Belt bronze medalists are set to compete in sprints and hurdles, as Jonae Cook will run in the first round of both the women’s 100 meters (7 p.m.) and 200 meters (8:45 p.m.) while Chelby Melvin is set to compete in the first round of the women’s 400-meter hurdles at 8:20 p.m.
Sophie Leathers closes out the day with the women’s 10,000 meters at 9:10 p.m. Leathers took silver in the event at the conference meet before winning the 5000 meters.
