CARLSBAD, Calif. (5/31/26) – A historic season for the No. 39 Arkansas State men’s golf team came to a close on Sunday at Omni La Costa, while the door remains open for Thomas Schmidt to compete for an individual national championship.
Leading the Red Wolves, Schmidt was one of the top nine individual scorers on a non-advancing team. Schmidt closed out the third round with a 1-over par 73 and has totaled 4-under par 212 through 54 holes. Preston Stout of Oklahoma State holds the individual lead at 11-under par 205 while three players are tied at 10-under for second.
Making its first appearance at the NCAA Championships, A-State was unable to make the 54-hole cut, falling below the top 15 cut line by 13 strokes. Instead, the Red Wolves’ season comes to an end as the team finished among the top 25 in the country. In round three, A-State shot 9-over par 297 to wrap up the weekend at 15-over 879. The Red Wolves, seeded 26th among the 30 teams, finished ahead of No. 40 Purdue (+16), No. 33 Louisville (+17), No. 20 Texas A&M (+18), Chattanooga (+20), No. 9 Ole Miss (+20), Memphis (+23), USC (+26) and Florida State (+35).
Auburn leads the tournament at 22-under par 842 with Texas (-19), Vanderbilt (-9), UCLA (-8), Arizona (-8) and Oklahoma State (-8) complete the top five and ties. North Carolina (-6), Duke (-1), Oklahoma (E), Virginia (+1), Florida (+1), LSU (+2), San Diego (+2), Tennessee (+2) and Stanford (+2) finished inside the top 15 to advance to the fourth round.
Finishing 22nd, A-State holds the third-best finish at the NCAA Championships by a Sun Belt Conference team. Louisiana finished 14th in 1993, UCF was 17th in 1987 and Georgia State was 22nd in 2014.
Jake Lile had the low round of the day for A-State players with an even-par 72. Lile joined Milan Reed and Jake Wallis at 7-over par 223 for the tournament to tie for 102nd overall. Cole Kirby finished tied for 141st with a total of 15-over par 231.
Schmidt will close out his record-breaking A-State career with a final round tee time of 12:45 p.m. (PST) off the 10th tee.
