JONESBORO, Ark. (5/10/25) – Arkansas State baseball (23-25, 11-14 SBC) recorded five home runs in the series opener versus Troy (36-15, 17-8 SBC), but a late rally forced extra innings and resulted in a 9-8 defeat in 12 innings on Slayton Family Field at Tomlinson Stadium.
Gavin Galy made his sixth start of the 2025 campaign, surrendering four runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 3.1 innings pitched.
Four Red Wolves accounted for five home runs, with Patrick Engskov delivering the only multi-homer performance. Cason Tollett recorded three RBIs in the effort, while Engskov and Ashton Quiller recorded two apiece.
The Trojans claimed a 2-0 lead in the opening frame on a single up the middle before Jake Henry Williams cut the deficit in half with a solo-homer in the bottom of the second.
Two more runs scored on a fielder’s choice and sacrifice bunt in the top of the fourth, extending Troy’s advantage to three runs. The Red Wolves countered with six in the next frame, beginning with a 393-foot solo-homer for Engskov.
Tollett pushed A-State in front with a three-run homer (404 feet) to left center while Ashton Quiller capped the bottom frame with a two-run missile (399 feet) to make the score 7-4. Engskov notched his second round-tripper in the fifth, sending a 396-foot missile to dead center.
The lead was erased in the seventh following a four-run inning for the opposition. The Trojans recorded an RBI-double and two RBI-singles before the last run scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 8-8.
Neither side could break the tie by the end of the ninth, forcing the game into extra innings. The stalemate stood firm going into the 12th inning, but a solo-homer in the top frame allowed Troy to escape and sealed a one-run defeat.
