JONESBORO, Ark. (4/25/25) – Arkansas State baseball (20-21, 9-10 SBC) faced late pressure from Georgia State (24-19, 9-10 SBC), but managed to hold on in a 6-4 decision on Friday night at Tomlinson Stadium-Slayton Family Field.

Gavin Galy (2-1) made his fourth start of the season, surrendering one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out two over 5.1 innings thrown. As a pitching staff, the Scarlet and Black finished with four runs (all earned) allowed on eight hits and four walks.

Ashton Quiller led the bats with his 12th multi-hit game of the season and sixth with three-plus knocks, finishing 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and a home run. Jeremiah Cabuyaban accounted for the other home run for A-State, leading the team with two RBIs.

The Red Wolves struck in the bottom of the first when Patrick Engskov fired a two-out single through the left side, scoring Wil French from second. Galy retired the side in order over the first two innings of action to keep the score at 1-0.

The Panthers could not capitalize with a runner at third in the top of the third, allowing Quiller to double the lead with a solo-homer to left center in the next frame.

Georgia State knocked on the door again with two outs in the fourth, loading the bases before a flyout in foul territory ended the scoring opportunity. A-State took advantage in the same inning, leading off with a walk that preceded Cabuyaban’s first career home run at the Division I level.

The 396-foot missile cleared the left field wall by 71 feet and made the score 4-0 in favor of the Scarlet and Black. A sacrifice bunt from Cross Jumper scored another run in the fifth and extended the lead to five.

Momentum began to shift away from the Red Wolves when the opposition launched a solo-homer to left in the sixth. The Panthers loaded the bases with no outs in the next inning, but Cooper Garrison entered the game and limited the scoring opportunity to one run.

Cason Campbell got one of the runs back with a single through the right side, but Georgia State scored two runs in the eighth to make the score 6-4. Chase Richter sealed the deal in the ninth after retiring the side in order to push the Scarlet and Black to a series-opening victory.

Galy earned the win while Cole Roberts (6-4) took the loss.
