MADISON, Miss. (4/22/25) – Thomas Schmidt and Jack Maxey are among three players tied for the individual as the Arkansas State men’s golf team leads the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Annandale Golf Club after 36 of 54 holes of stroke play.
A-State posted a second consecutive par or better round finishing the second round at even-par 288. Following a first round 10-under par 278, the Red Wolves lead Coastal Carolina (-6) by four and Georgia Southern (-4) by six entering the final round of stroke play Wednesday. Louisiana (+1), Troy (+1), Texas State (+2), Georgia State (+6), James Madison (+6), ULM (+8), Southern Miss (+11), South Alabama (+17), Old Dominion (+18), Marshall (+19) and Appalachian State (+20) round out the field. The top four teams at conclusion of Wednesday’s final round of stroke play advance to match play semifinals on Thursday.
Maxey had the low round of the day for A-State at 3-under par 69 to climb to 5-under par 139 for the tournament. Schmidt was 3-over par 75 Tuesday and joins Maxey and Eli Ortego of Louisiana at 5-under par for the individual lead. Four players are tied for second at 3-under par 141. Chris Somerfield carded a 1-under par 71 with a birdie on 17 and 17 pars on the round and stands tied for 18th at even-par 144 (73-71). Jake Wallis was 1-over par 73 in the second round and is tied for 21st at 1-over par 145 (72-73) while Jake Lile is tied for 32nd at 3-over par 147 (72-75).
Maxey and Schmidt at 5-under par 139 ranks as the fifth-lowest 36-hole total by any A-State player at the conference championship. The Red Wolves 36-hole total of 10-under par 566 is the second lowest at a conference championship in program history behind a 555 total at the 2019 SBC Championship played at Raven Golf Club. A-State has 18 par or better rounds this season, one shy of the program record of 19 set in the 2018-19 season.
The final round of stroke play begins at 8:30 a.m. with the Red Wolves joined by Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern on the first tee. Live coverage is available on ESPN+ and live scoring is available via Scoreboard by Clippd.
