MEMPHIS, Tenn. (4/22/25) – Arkansas State baseball (19-21, 8-10 SBC) surrendered four home runs against Memphis (16-24, 4-11 American), but seven runs over the first three innings paired with strong pitching down the stretch resulted in an 8-6 victory on Tuesday night at FedExPark.
Jack Nelson made his sixth start of the season, surrendering four runs (all earned) on seven hits while striking out five over 3.2 innings pitched. Five Red Wolves entered in relief and combined for two runs (all earned) on five hits while striking out seven over the final 5.1 innings of action.
Drake Anderson (4-for-5) led the team in hits while Daedrick Cail (3-for-4) and Ashton Quiller (3-for-6) joined the multi-hit club. Wil French recorded a team high of three RBIs in the contest, with Cason Campbell adding two.
A-State made the first strike in the opening frame, scoring two on a two-out single from Cason Campbell. The Tigers put runners in scoring position in the bottom of the inning, but could not capitalize as the score remained 2-0.
The bases were loaded in the second before Ashton Quiller fired a single to centerfield and scored Drake Anderson. A bases-loaded walk for French, his second of the game, extended the lead to four.
Another run scored on a 6-4-3 double play before the top frame concluded, making the score 5-0. Memphis responded in the bottom of the second with a solo-home run to left field and cut the lead to four.
Daedrick Cail recorded an RBI-single to nullify the homer, and the third baseman reached home on a groundout later in the frame to make the score 7-1.
Another home run cut into the lead, as the Tigers netted two runs with a shot to right field in the bottom of the fourth. A third round-tripper added one run to make it a three-run ballgame going into the fifth.
Memphis recorded another two-run homer in the fifth, but the lead remained in A-State’s favor with a 7-6 score.
The Scarlet and Black broke a cold stretch by loading the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh. Only one run would score on a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to two runs after seven innings of action.
The Tigers added two runners on a walk and fielder’s choice beyond that point, as the Red Wolves’ pitching staff closed the door on a comeback. The win completes the season sweep of Memphis for the first time since 2016.
Tyler Weimer (1-0) earned the win and Chase Richter (6) claimed the save while Seth Cox (1-3) took the loss.
