Welsh, Big Inning Propel A-State to 6-1 Win Over Texas State
JONESBORO, Ark. (5/4/18) – The Arkansas State baseball team got a quality start from Bradey Welsh and took advantage of a Texas State mistake with a five-run fifth inning in a 6-1 victory over the Bobcats Friday night at Tomlinson Stadium after the start was delayed by 38 minutes due to weather.
Welsh allowed a first-inning run, but didn’t allow anything else the rest of the game in his seventh quality start of the season. The Marshfield, Mo., native went six innings and allowed the one run on five hits with five strikeouts against one walk. Peyton Culbertson tossed a scoreless seventh frame, while Bo Ritter allowed just one baserunner the final two innings to preserve the win for Welsh.
Tobias Johnson began A-State’s big inning with a bunt single before a hit-by-pitch put another runner on. Pinch-hitter Caleb Squire attempted a sacrifice bunt, but it was right back to the Texas State (22-23-1, 10-12 SBC) pitcher Connor Reich. However, Reich’s throw to third base to attempt to get the lead runner out sailed high and allowed Johnson to score to tie the game 1-1.
A-State (16-25, 7-15 SBC) took the lead on a wild pitch that allowed Cullen Ray to score and added to it with a RBI single from Drew Tipton to move in front 3-1. The Red Wolves added two more runs on a sacrifice fly by Kyle MacDonald and RBI double from Casey Vaughan to go in front 5-1 with four of the five runs being unearned. Tipton scored in the seventh inning on a passed ball to set the final of 6-1.
Both teams swatted six hits with Tipton’s RBI single in the fifth increasing his hit streak to 16 games, while Jeremy Brown singled to increase his on-base streak to 22 games and give him hits in 21 of his last 22 games. The Bobcats’ Jared Huber led the visitors with three hits, but Texas State didn’t have an extra-base hit in the contest. Reich took the loss after allowing the five runs (one earned) in six innings.
Arkansas State and Texas State resume the series Saturday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
