JONESBORO, Ark. (5/15/18) – Arkansas State belted four home runs, but it wasn’t enough as No. 4 Ole Miss scored multiple runs in five innings to defeat the Red Wolves 15-8 Tuesday night at Tomlinson Stadium.
Kyle MacDonald had a big night at the plate for A-State (18-30) going 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs. MacDonald hit his first blast of the night in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo shot and then followed with a mammoth two-run blast to center field in the next inning.
MacDonald now leads the team with 13 home runs on the year, which is the most for an A-State player since Murray Watts also had 13 blasts in 2010.
Grant Hawkins led off the game for the Red Wolves with a solo home run, and Jacob Jablonski notched his first-career home run with a three-run shot to right field in the sixth inning. Jablonski and MacDonald combined to drive in six of A-State’ eight runs on the night, four of which came in the sixth inning.
Casey Vaughan, who went 2-for-3, scored on a passed ball in the second inning for A-State.
Ole Miss (40-13) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning and never trailed in the contest. After Hawkins hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the first inning, the Rebels responded with a run in the second and two more in the third to push their lead to 6-2 after three innings.
The lead grew to 10-2 after the top of the fifth inning, but Jablonski and MacDonald helped get A-State within four runs after their home runs, but Ole Miss answered again with three runs in the top of the seventh and two more in the eighth that book-ended MacDonald’s two-run homer in the seventh inning.
Arkansas State will return to the field for its final Sun Belt Conference series of the year when it takes on Little Rock Thursday evening. First-pitch from Gary Hogan Field is set for 6 p.m.
