A-State Volleyball Hires Damler as Assistant Coach
JONESBORO, Ark. (6/12/18) – Arkansas State head volleyball coach David Rehr announced Tuesday that Carissa Damler has joined the coaching staff for the upcoming 2018 campaign.
Damler is a native of Brownsburg, Ind., and just recently wrapped up her collegiate playing career at Purdue, where she was a defensive specialist from 2014-17. She saw action in 76 career matches, including all 66 of the Boilermakers’ matches the last two seasons.
“I believe Carissa will be a great addition to our staff,” Rehr said. “She went through an extensive interview process and with her background in the Big Ten she is aware of the level of play we are striving for.”
She was a member of a Purdue team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons, while this past season’s team claimed a 23-10 record and was ranked in the top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll all 16 weeks of the season.
“I would like to thank Coach Rehr and (Director of Athletics) Terry Mohajir for this opportunity as well as (Purdue Head Coach) Dave Shondell, (Purdue Associate Head Coach) John Shondell, and (Purdue Assistant Coach) Kathy Jewell for making this opportunity possible,” Damler stated. “I am so excited to get the chance to work in a new volleyball environment, while continuing to learn and develop as a coach. I’m looking forward to a great 2018 season and go Red Wolves!”
Damler posted 133 digs in 2017, good for a 1.18 per set average and fifth best on the team, while she also contributed 25 assists, four aces, and a kill. She helped the Purdue defense hold opponents to a .210 hitting percentage. The 2016 campaign for her was solid as well as she picked up 232 digs for a 1.80 per set mark. Additionally, she was successful on 95% of her serve reception chances and dished out 40 assists with 11 aces.
The former Boilermaker was also an Academic All-Big Ten honoree in 2015 and earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2017.
She is expected to coach the team’s back row and libero, while also playing an integral role in scouting and game planning.
