A-State Baseball Falls to Texas State 10-3

JONESBORO, Ark. (5/5/18) – The Arkansas State baseball team dropped the second game of a three-game series with Texas State 10-3 Saturday night at Tomlinson Stadium.
The Red Wolves (16-26, 7-16 SBC) out hit the Bobcats (23-23-1, 11-12 SBC) 10-9 on the night, but Texas State scored runs in each of the first five innings and finished the night with four, two-run innings to even the series at a game each.
Arkansas State took a 3-2 lead after the first inning when Casey Vaughan and Winston Welch delivered back-to-back RBI hits. Vaughan singled in Jeremy Brown and then Welch followed with a 2-run single that plated Kyle MacDonald and Vaughan to up 3-2.
Texas State took the lead back in the second inning on an RBI single by Jacob Almendarez and then added another run in the third to push the advantage to 5-3. Almendarez and Jonathan Ortega added drove in runs in the fourth inning to chase A-State starter Nate Alberius, who gave up eight runs (five earned) on seven hits in four innings.
Coulton Lee replaced Alberius and finished the final five innings and gave up two hits and two runs.
Vaughan led the Red Wolves with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with a RBI, while Welch had a hit and two RBIs. MacDonald and Jacob Jablonski also finished with two hits each to round out the day for A-State. Almendarez led the Bobcats with two hits and three RBI at the plate, while Nicholas Fraze earned the win for the visitors after he allowed three runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts against three walks. Braden Pearson picked up a three-inning save.
The rubber match of the series will take place Sunday afternoon at Tomlison Stadium. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m.
