Team George Evens Fall World Series With 6-2 Victory

November 5, 2021

JONESBORO, Ark. (11/5/21) – Strong pitching and a 3-run fifth inning were all it took for Team George to even up Arkansas State baseball’s Fall World Series, taking Game 2 6-2 over Team Guarno.

Mickey Coyne was mostly responsible for that fifth-inning scoring output, launching a 3-run homer to right field to make it a 4-1 contest at the time. Coyne also contributed on the mound, tossing 2 2/3 innings of relief behind starter Carter Holt, who delivered a pair of shutout innings.

Team Guarno starter Justin Medlin was strong in his 2.0 innings of work, striking out five and allowing just two baserunners. He combined with five other pitchers for 10 strikeouts in the seven-inning affair, with Treshon Paschal striking out the side in his perfect seventh inning.

Five players each recorded a hit for Team George, including doubles by Ben Klutts and Garrett Olson to accompany Coyne’s homer. Six different players who reached base scored.

It was a scoreless pitcher’s duel until the bottom of the third, when Medlin drove in Blake McCutchen from third on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 in favor of the black-uniformed Team Guarno. Team George evened up the score in the top of the fourth when Tristen Jamison plated Wil French, also via sac fly.

Then, it was all Team George, with Olson leading off with a double before a wild pitch moved him to third and Jackson Harris drawing a walk to put two on for Coyne, who skied his long ball over the right-field fence.

Team George, donning Scarlet, scored two more in the sixth on a 2-RBI single by the freshman Harris to make it 6-1. Team Guarno added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a balk, but Team George closer Kevin Wiseman shook it off and fired a pair of strikeouts to end it.

Game 3 of the series is slated for 2:45 p.m. Sunday at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field. Admission is free.
