Students Return for Welcome Week and 2020-21 Year

August 22, 2020

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University students will continue moving in to campus housing this weekend in the midst of safety and precautionary adjustments made necessary by the pandemic.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, physical distancing and face coverings are required during move-in and at all in-person events.  Also, community volunteers will not be able to assist with the move-in this year.

Residence Life will be open all day Saturday, Aug. 22.  Several offices will be open from 9 a.m. until noon, including Registrar, Treasurer, Financial Aid, Parking Services, Wilson Advising Center and Campus Card Center.

Student service offices also will be open Monday-Friday during their normal operating hours of 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., for the convenience of students and their families who need to meet with staff.

A change this year replaces the previous First-Year Convocation with college open houses.  First-year students will participate in virtual format open houses Monday from 10-11 a.m. as the academic community welcomes the newest class of learners.

Fall semester classes will start Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Welcome Week also includes several Student Activities Board-sponsored events, including:

— Saturday, 7-8 p.m., Virtual Playlist Bingo. A-State’s SAB social media accounts will share the links to play, and cash prizes will be awarded.

— Sunday, 6-8 p.m., “Painting w/ Pinot’s Palette” gives students a fun opportunity to paint their own Red Wolf canvas.  Grab and go snacks are available, and DJ King Vick will provide music.

— Monday, 2-4 p.m.: Scavenger hunt, SGA class gift, and “I Count” t-shirt pickup.  Prizes will be awarded to the first ones who complete the scavenger hunt.  More details will be posted on the SAB and SGA social media accounts.

— Tuesday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Multicultural Center will welcome incoming and returning students.

— Tuesday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., students will enjoy lawn games, socially distanced, and popsicles while meeting other students.

— Tuesday, 7:47 p.m., SAB & 747 will present the classic movie, “Space Jam,” in drive-in style at the Tomlinson Stadium parking lot.  Snacks and drinks will be provided.

— Thursday, 7:30-8:30 p.m., Magician Peter Boie will present his entertaining and amazing show virtually.  Details on how to access the show will be on the SAB social media accounts.

— Friday, 6:30-8 p.m., Trivia on the Lawn will feature several opening rounds; participating students will be eligible to win a “Stock Your Crib” prize, ranging from Amazon FireSticks to a new Roku TV. Snacks and drinks will be provided, and participants must have a valid A-State ID.

More information on these and other events during A-State’s Welcome Week are available on the university calendar of events,
