Strong Performance for A-State Women’s Cross Country in Season Opener

September 2, 2018

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (9/1/18) – Anaelle Charles finished third to pace the Arkansas State women’s cross country team to a second place team finish at the season opening Memphis Twilight Classic late Saturday night at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

Missouri topped the team standings followed by A-State, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Charles paced the A-State women’s entrants with a time of 17:55.47 on the 5k course. Pauline Meyer (18:34.59) was 11th overall while Rebecca Eldien (18:44.98) was third followed by Sammy Brainard (19:10.55) and Kyandra Chandler (19:12.42) rounded out the top five for the Red Wolves.

“We beat some quality teams today in the women’s field,” said A-State cross country coach Kyle Chandler. “Ole Miss was a national qualifier last year and all these top five teams are regionally ranked. Anaelle was very patient in her race and let it come to her. She moved from 10th to third from the two mile to finish line.”

The A-State men placed seventh in the team standings and were led by sophomore Seth Waters (21:27.36). Waters was followed by Bennett Pascoe (41st – 21:31.46), Owen Habeger (46th – 21:35.53), Jacob Oury (50th – 21:42.06) and Ethan Mychajlonka (22:06.96) among the Red Wolves top-five finishers.

“For the men, our effort was not what we need if we want to be competitive,” Chandler said. “We’re not going to sugarcoat it, but tonight was disappointing for the men. We have to compete better as a group.”

A-State returns to competition at the Chile Pepper Festival on Sept. 22 in Fayetteville, Ark.
