FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (5/26/22) – On Thursday at the NCAA West Preliminaries, members of the Arkansas State women’s track and field program competed as part of the second day of competition.
Grace Flowers closed out her standout career on Thursday, competing in the women’s hammer throw. The 2022 Sun Belt bronze medalist placed 31st overall in her final meet, throwing 57.91m (190-0.0).
In the women’s javelin, Camryn Newton-Smith placed 35th with a best toss of 43.84m. The Greenbank, Australia, native’s season is not yet complete, as she will vie for a spot at nationals in the high jump on Saturday.
Jonae Cook ran in the first round of both the 100 meters and 200 meters. She placed 44th in the 100 with a time of 11.87 before finishing 41st in the 200 with a mark of 24.12.
Chelby Melvin placed 39th in the first round of the women’s 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:00.05.
Sophie Leathers closed out the night in the 10,000 meters, placing 46th with a time of 36:36.58.
Evangelynn Harris competed in the shot put, but fouled on her trio of throws. However, she will have another shot at advancing to Eugene, competing in the discus on Saturday.
On Friday, Sun Belt silver medalist Frank Massey jumps in the men’s high jump at 2:30 p.m., entering the event tied for seventh in the West with a clearance of 2.18m (7-1.75). Two-time SBC champion and 2021 outdoor All-American Bennett Pascoe will then look to punch his second consecutive ticket to Eugene in the steeplechase at 5:40 p.m.
