    JONESBORO, Ark. (2/1/24) – Arkansas State track and field enters the final month of the indoor regular season with a pair of meets across three days, beginning Friday at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque.

    The field includes seven top-25 programs on both the men’s and women’s sides, representing another weekend of stiff competition for the Red Wolves. FloTrack will provide a live stream of the meet with a purchased subscription.

    While some will compete at altitude in New Mexico, another group of Red Wolves will compete in a handful of track events at the South Alabama Jaguar Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. – the site of the Sun Belt Conference Championships later this month.

    A-State’s first event on Friday in the Land of Enchantment – the B section of the women’s pole vault – is slated for noon CT, with the Red Wolves’ first track event set for 5:35 p.m. Saturday gets underway at 11:30 a.m. with the women’s shot put while the men’s 60-meter hurdle prelims get things started on the track at 12:05 p.m.

    On Sunday in Birmingham, the women’s mile opens competition for the Scarlet and Black at 12:30 p.m.

    NOTABLES:

    1.     NEARING THE TOP 25: Arkansas State’s men’s track and field team found itself just on the outside of the top-25 rankings this week, coming in at 26th in the USTFCCCA TFRI rankings. It is the best ranking for the men’s program since being ranked 26th in the 2016 preseason rankings. A-State has not been in in the top 25 since ending the season 24th in 2014.

    2.     QUALIFYING POSITION: A pair of Arkansas State athletes are currently ranked among the top 16 in their respective events, putting them in position to qualify for the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships. Bradley Jelmert ranks second in the pole vault, while Colby Eddowes is sixth in the heptathlon (5,821).   

    3.     ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Arkansas State swept the Sun Belt’s men’s track and field Athletes of the Week honors this week, with Colby Eddowes earning Field Athlete of the Week after re-setting his own conference and school record in the heptathlon. Cash Kunkel garnered Track Athlete of the Week laurels after running a career-best 4:08.87 in the mile.

    4.     CONFERENCE LEADERS: Arkansas State leads the Sun Belt Conference in multiple events enter this week. On the men’s side, Red Wolves hold the top spot in the men’s mile (Hannes Fahl – 4:06.87), men’s 5000 meters (Jacob Pyeatt – 14:14.63), men’s pole vault (Bradley Jelmert – 5.72m/18-9.25), men’s shot put (Willem Coertzen – 17.94m/58-10.25) and heptathlon (Colby Eddowes – 5,821). Cheyenne Melvin tops the women’s 800 meters (2:08.74), while Elizabeth Martin (5000 meters – 17:06.59), Carly Pujol (pole vault – 3.93m/12-10.75) and Michelle Ogbemudia (weight throw – 20.73m/68-0.25) also lead their respective events.

    5.     #EVENTSQUAD RANKINGS DEBUT: The Scarlet and Black was well-represented on the USTFCCCA’s first #EventSquad rankings of the season. The men’s 60-meter hurdles group was ranked ninth, with pole vault and shot put coming at 23rd and 24th, while the women’s shot put and pole vault came in at 13th and 21st, respectively.

    A-State’s final weekend of regular-season competition is next on the docket, with the Red Wolves competing in the Music City Challenge (Feb. 9-10) and the Bulldog Invitational (Feb. 10) in Birmingham, Ala.
