Red Wolves Earn 12 Top-10 Finishes at Jim Green Invitational

January 12, 2019

LEXINGTON, Ky. (1/12/19) – The Arkansas State Track & Field teams returned to competition following the holiday break at the Jim Green Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky this weekend.

A-State left Nutter Field House with 12 top-10 finishes and six marks that place top-10 among the Red Wolves program bests.

“There were a few bright spots, but as a team we were a little rusty following the Christmas break,” said A-State head coach Jim Patchell. ‘It is going to take a couple of weeks for us to sharpen up into competition form, but I like the potential of both our men’s and women’s team moving forward.”

Senior Caitland Smith had the best finish of the day, racing to a second place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.12 seconds. Freshman Osereme Erewele placed 10th in that race clocking a time of 24.94 seconds, the ninth-fastest in A-State history. In the 60-meter dash, Smith finished fourth overall, but her preliminary time of 7.49 seconds ranks third all-time at A-State. Erewele was 16th overall after preliminaries, but her time of 7.67 seconds ranks seventh on the A-State top-10 list.

On the men’s side, the sprints and hurdles also highlighted the day for the Red Wolves. Sophomore Ke’Von Holder finished sixth overall in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.03 seconds for the fifth-fastest time among the program bests. Junior Amari James clocked a time of 8.23 seconds in the preliminaries, just missing the final and placing 10th, but his time ranks eighth-fastest on the all-time list. Freshman Jermie Walker got his name in the program ranks with a time of 21.71 seconds to rank tied for the eighth-fastest while placing sixth at the meet.

The men’s triple jump group for A-State accounted for three top-10 finishes Saturday. Sophomore Carter Shell led the group with a leap of 14.65m/48-0.75 to place sixth while Courtney Thomas (8th – 14.04m/46-0.75) and Alex Strong (10th – 13.99m/45-10.75) placed inside the top-10.

Others logging top-10 finishes included; Dylan Western in the high jump (5th – 2.05m/6-8.75), Eron Carter in the weight throw (6th – 17.00m/55-9.25), Sydney Lane in the high jump (9th – 1.61m/5-3.25) and Courtney Thomas in the long jump (9th – 7.01m/23-0.00).
