HATTIESBURG, Miss. (1/17/24) – Southern Miss closed on a 7-1 run to take a 69-66 decision over the Arkansas state men’s basketball team Wednesday night inside Reed Green Coliseum.
A-State (7-11, 3-3 SBC) owned a halftime edge and led by as much as nine in the second half, but the Golden Eagles (10-8, 4-2) outscored the Scarlet and Black 38-33 in the final 20 minutes to complete the comeback.
Caleb Fields led the Red Wolves with 16 points, nine assists and five rebounds, while Taryn Todd scored 13 off the bench. Derrian Ford added 11 points, and Dyondre Dominguez led all players with 12 rebounds and eight points.
The Red Wolves shot 34.4 percent (21-61) from the field and hit on 14 of 34 from 3-point range (41.2 percent).
Austin Crowley led Southern Miss with a game-high 25 points, with Donovan Ivory adding 15. Victor Iwuakor recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 35.4 percent (23-65) from the floor and went 16-for-21 (76.2 percent) at the charity stripe, while also holding a 50-41 rebounding advantage.
The hosts opened on a 7-0 run, broken by a Ford trey. A Fields perimeter score gave A-State its first lead of the contest with 10:38 to go in the half – a 15-14 edge. USM then answered with a 6-0 run to retake a lead that would stand until Fields capped a 7-2 run to end the half, giving A-State a 33-31 lead at the break.
A-State came out hot after intermission, opening on a 9-2 run with a trio from downtown by Fields and Felts to push its lead out to nine. Southern Miss pulled to within a score midway through the final 20 minutes, but the Red Wolves answered to lead by five.
Southern Miss reclaimed the lead on a three by Iwuakor before Fields found Felts beyond the arc with 3:12 to play, putting the Red Wolves back ahead 65-62. The Golden Eagles went on to hold A-State to without a field goal the rest of the way and take the win.
Arkansas State looks to return to the win column Saturday at Texas State. Tip-off against the Bobcats inside Strahan Arena in San Marcos, Texas, is set for 4:15 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN Plus while the radio broadcast can be heard across the EAB Red Wolves Sports Network as well as the A-State Athletics mobile app.
