NASHVILLE, Tenn./ DES MOINES, Iowa/STARKVILLE, Miss. (4/29/23) – With under two weeks remaining until the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships, the Arkansas State track and field teams concluded another stellar regular season on Saturday in a trio of meets.
The Red Wolves capped off the weekend with a dozen top-five finishes, as well as two event crowns and five athletes setting personal bests on Saturday.
Aimar Palma Simo opened the day with a victory in the men’s hammer throw, tossing 67.10m (220-2), while Jonae Cook took the women’s 100 meters later in the day, tying her season best with a time of 11.51. Cook also ran the top qualifying mark, finishing in 11.67.
Freshman Danarrion Ard also posted a top-three finish in the men’s 100 meters, finishing in 10.38 after recording the second-fastest prelims time of 10.40.
Will Glass earned a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 13.90 after a prelims mark of 14.46.
Cheyenne Melvin inched closer to the school record in the women’s 800 meters, finishing fifth with a personal-best 2:06.38.
In the men’s shot put, Willem Coertzen (17.46m/57-3.5) and Jacob Tracy (17.38m/57-0.25) placed third and fourth, respectively, with Tracy throwing a personal record. Selase Sampram also threw a career best in the women’s shot put with a top throw of 15.68m (51-1).
Jermie Walker led the way in the men’s 400, placing 13th with a time of 49.53, followed by Steffan Mallory in 17th running a season-best 50.94 and Bradley Miller in 20th with a personal-best 51.81.
A-State also took the track in the Drake Relays, running in the distance medley relay. The Scarlet and Black made its opportunity count in both races, setting school records in both the women’s (11:32.44) and men’s (9:59.36) events.
At the Maroon and White Invite, Lauren Beauchamp cleared a season-best 4.03m (13-2.75) to place third in the women’s pole vault, while Bella Coscetti vaulted 3.73m (12-2.75). Trace South recorded a season-best clearance of 4.81m (15-9.25) to place fifth in the men’s pole vault.
Camryn Newton-Smith and Izzy Daines competed in the 100-meter hurdles, running wind-aided times of 13.95 and 14.26 to place sixth and ninth, respectively.
In the women’s triple jump, Megan Knowling jumped a season-best 11.66m (38-3) to earn a fourth-place result.
