MADISON, Miss. (4/25/23) – Turning in the low round of the day at 9-under par 279, the Arkansas State men’s golf team climbed the leaderboard to seventh after 36 holes of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Annandale Golf Club.
Carding the 9-under par 279 Tuesday, A-State posts its best round at the Sun Belt Conference Championship since turning in a 10-under par 274 in the second round of the 2019 SBC Championship at Raven Club in Sandestin, Fla. It’s the third time in program history, including a 278 (-6) in 2016, to go 278 or lower at the Sun Belt Conference Championship. A day after going a combined 11-over par on the first and second holes, the Red Wolves were 1-under par Tuesday. A-State had a combined 10 birdies in the first round, but responded with 22 in the second round and did not record a score worse than bogey.
Georgia Southern finished the second round at 8-under par 280 and leads after 36 holes with a total of 3-under par 573. Louisiana (+2), Troy (+4), Southern Miss (+5), Texas State (+5) and South Alabama (+5) are just ahead of the Red Wolves in the team standings. The top-four teams from the 54-hole stroke play event will advance to match play on Thursday.
Luka Naglic birdied four of his last five holes and finished up 5-under par 67 for the low round by an individual on the course Tuesday. Naglic entered the day tied 42nd and climbed 32 spots to a tie for 10th with a total of 1-under par 143. Thomas Schmidt climbed 25 spots to a tie for 13th following a 3-under par 69 Tuesday to total even-par 144 thus far. Jack Madden was also under par Tuesday finishing up 1-under par and he enters the final round tied for 22nd with a total of 3-over par 147. Jack Maxey finished up the second round at even-par and is tied for 38th at 149 (+5) while Devyn Pappas is 67th at 157 (+13).
