Tax refund scams, including those committed by unscrupulous tax preparers, are an ever present danger to your financial health. Their crimes can range from stealing your information to create a false identity to stealing your tax refund. Worse, scammers can often commit their crimes while leaving you holding the bag. Without evidence that you are a victim of fraud, the IRS may still hold you accountable for false or inaccurate filings, which could result in additional fees, penalties and financial headaches.
