Nine Top-10 Program Marks for A-State at Spec Towns Invitational

ATHENS, Ga. (4/6/19) – Nine top-10 program ranks, including a school record in the women’s 4x100m relay, highlighted a strong weekend for the Arkansas State track and field teams at the Spec Towns Invitational.

Caitland Smith took the top time in the 200-meter dash sprinting to a finish of 23.27 seconds. Smith along with Jonae Cook, Kerra Williams and Osereme Erewele improved their school record in the 4×100-meter relay to 45.13 seconds.

Emma Nwofor competed in the heptathlon and nearly reached Shundra Smith’s school record total of 5,377 points set in 1996. Nwofor totaled 5,361 points for second at the meet and second-most in school history. The total ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference, third in the NCAA West Region and fifth nationally.

The women’s throws group had a strong weekend with four top-10 program marks. Babette Vandeput placed second in the discus throw at 49.70m (163-1) while Grace Flowers placed fifth with a throw of 48.85m (160-3), the fifth-best throw in program history. Flowers finished third in the hammer throw at 55.06m (180-8), the third-best throw in program history. Hannah Higgins finished sixth in the hammer throw at 50.61m (166-0), the sixth-best throw on the program charts. Evangelynn Harris placed third in the shot put and her throw of 14.48m (47-6.25) ranks sixth in program history.

Sydney Lane continued her strong freshman season with a big clearance in the high jump. She cleared 1.75m (5-8.75) to tie for seventh-best clearance in program history. Imani Udoumana finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.52m (41-1), tied for the sixth-best jump in program history. Frank Massey took second place in the men’s high jump clearing 2.12m (6-11.50), a personal-best.

Those also earning top-five finishes included; Heinrich Herbst in 800m run (2nd – 1:52.61), Carter Shell in long jump (2nd – 7.59m/24-11.00), Gracee Damron in 400m hurdles (3rd – 1:01.96), Arabriaun Mack in triple jump (4th – 11.87m/38-11.50), Courtney Thomas in triple jump (4th – 14.47m/47-5.75), Johnaya Givens in triple jump (5th – 11.66m/38-3.25), Ke’Von Holder in 110m hurdles (5th – 14.49), Tiaan Steenkamp in high jump (5th – 2.02m/6-7.50), Courtney Thomas in long jump (5th – 7.14m/23-5.25), Jermie Walker in 400m dash (5th – 47.59)

A-State is scheduled to have student-athletes compete at the Triton Invitational in San Deigo, Calif., and the Joe Walker Invitational in Oxford, Miss., next week. The Red Wolves Open is scheduled for April 19-20 at the A-State Track & Field Complex and A-State will host the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships May 10-12.
