Newton-Smith, Hensley Take Top Two Spots At Samford Multis

January 21, 2021

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (1/21/21) – Camryn Newton-Smith and Allie Hensley placed first and second, respectively, as the Arkansas State women’s track and field pair competed in the pentathlon at the Samford Multis Thursday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

The All-American Newton-Smith finished first with 4,068 points, just three points shy of matching her school-record 4,071 points scored at the same venue at the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships. Her mark is also the best in Division I this season, while currently ranking third in the world. Hensley totaled 3,602 points, notching personal-bests in the 60m hurdles, high jump and shot put.

Newton-Smith began the day by winning the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.59 to earn 997 points, while Hensley placed sixth with a personal-best 9.33 for 843 points.

In the high jump, Hensley moved up to second in the leaderboard by clearing a personal-best 1.74m (5-8.5) en route to winning the event with 903 points. That mark tied her for eighth in program history with Newton-Smith, who followed in second with a mark of 1.71m (5-7.25) for 867 points. After two events, Newton-Smith and Hensley placed first and second in the overall standings.

Newton-Smith and Hensley went 1-2 again in the shot put, with both recording personal bests. Newton-Smith uncorked a throw of 12.12m (39-9.25) for 669 points while Hensley tossed 11.55m (37-10.75) for 631 points.
