AUSTIN, Texas (6/9/23) – On Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Arkansas State’s Camryn Newton-Smith completed the first day of the heptathlon under the lights of Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Sun Belt Conference champion totaled a score of 3,420 through the first four events to end the day in 15th place.
Newton-Smith opened the heptathlon with a time of 13.71 in the 100-meter hurdles to earn 1,020 points. She moved up to seventh after two events, clearing 1.72m (5-7.75) in the high jump to move her point total to 1,899.
In the shot put portion, Newton-Smith uncorked a throw of 12.57m (41-3) to run her total to 2,598. She ranked 10th in the standings after three events.
The senior rounded out the first day of competition in the 200 meters, recording a time of 25.72 to add 822 points.
The championships conclude Saturday, with Newton-Smith in the final three events of the heptathlon and Pauline Meyer in the final of the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase. Newton-Smith is slated to start at 4 p.m. with the long jump, while Meyer’s race is set for approximately 8:24 p.m. All events will be broadcasted on ESPN+, while ESPN2 will carry track events for Meyer and Newton-Smith.
