Ava Duvernay, Chris Evans, and others slammed Kanye West for his “terrifying” calls to abolish the constitutional amendment that ended slavery in a blistering tweet replying to the rapper’s bizarre musings.

West left fans bewildered on Sunday after he posted a photo of himself wearing a Make America Great Again on a private jet and called for the removal of the 13th Amendment in the caption. ‘This represents good and American becoming whole again,’ the 41-year-old wrote. ‘We will no longer outsource to other countries. We build factories here in America and create jobs. We will provide jobs for all who are free from prisons as we abolish the 13th amendment. Message sent with love.’

Evans responded with a vitriolic tweet about an hour later, writing: ‘There’s nothing more maddening than debating someone who doesn’t know history, doesn’t read books, and frames their myopia as virtue. ‘The level of unapologetic conjecture I’ve encountered lately isn’t just frustrating, it’s retrogressive, unprecedented and absolutely terrifying.’ Kanye later attempted to explain his remarks in two other tweets, writing: ‘the 13th Amendment is slavery in disguise meaning it never ended We are the solution that heals.’ In the second post he clarified: ‘not abolish but let’s amend the 13th amendment We apply everyone’s opinions to our platform.’

Chris Rock was in the audience and posted it to Instagram.

The string of tweets sparked confusion among fans who struggled to comprehend what exactly West is trying to say. The main section of the amendment he referenced reads: ‘Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.’

Kanye did receive support on social media.

Somebody please give this man his medication!
