JONESBORO, Ark. (2/3/24) – Arkansas State women’s basketball (12-9, 6-5 SBC) relied heavily on Anna Griffin’s sharpshooting to power past Old Dominion (15-6, 7-4 SBC) by a score of 76-63 on Saturday afternoon at First National Bank Arena.

Izzy Higginbottom led all scorers with 33 points and scored 19 from the free throw line on 20 attempts. She broke her own conference record for consecutive free throws made (53) before recording her only miss of the game.

Anna Griffin finished with 21 points in the contest and recorded all of them from 3-point range. She shot 7-for-9 (78 percent) from beyond the arc with five coming in the second half.

As a team, A-State shot 20-for-43 (47 percent) from the field and 8-for-19 (42 percent) from deep. The Scarlet and Black made 28 free throws on 34 attempts, setting a new season-high for makes and falling two shy of the season-high for attempts set against North Alabama.

Both teams were neck-and-neck throughout the first, but the Red Wolves managed to come out of the quarter with a 19-18 lead. The Monarchs had a higher shooting percentage (58 percent) from the field during the period, but Higginbottom was able to create free throw opportunities, shooting 6-for-6 while the team shot 7-for-8 (88 percent) as a whole.

After falling behind 25-23, Old Dominion used an 8-0 run to take the lead and outscored the Scarlet and Black 12-4 after the 6:17 mark. The Red Wolves only made two field goals in the quarter as they entered the half trailing 35-29.

A-State shot 7-for-23 (30 percent) from the field, 2-for-11 (18 percent) from 3-point range, and 13-of-14 (93 percent) from the free-throw line during the first half. The Monarchs outscored the Red Wolves in turnovers (11-2) and in the paint (18-10).

Griffin opened the quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers as the Scarlet and Black fought their way to a 40-40 tie with 6:16 remaining. Old Dominion would be outscored 14-7 from there as A-State took a 54-47 lead into the final quarter.

The Monarchs cut the lead down to a point with 6:16 left to go in the fourth, but A-State eventually pulled away with an 8-0 run that made the score 68-57. It was the first time either team held a double-digit advantage in the contest as the Scarlet and Black closed the game with a 13-point victory.

Higginbottom has scored at least 30 points for the third consecutive game, trailing Caitlyn Clark (5) for the longest active streak in the nation. It was her seventh 30-point performance of the season, putting her two games shy of tying the team-record set by Sonja Tate during the 1992-93 campaign.
