Faculty Achievement Award Winners Announced for 2019-20

JONESBORO – The four recipients of the 2019-20 Faculty Achievement Awards – in advising, professional service, research and teaching – were announced Wednesday during the annual Faculty Conference, the beginning of the academic year at Arkansas State University.

“Our faculty award winners are recognized by their peers as a result of their outstanding efforts in the areas of teaching, research, service and advising.  A-State and our students are very fortunate to have these individuals as part of our faculty,” stated Dr. Alan Utter, provost and executive vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and Research.  “The recognition of excellence by your colleagues is one of the most noteworthy accolades one can receive in an institution of higher education.”

The awards are for “significant and meritorious achievement” in the respective categories.

Excellence in Teaching Award: Dr. Virginie Rolland

Dr. Virginie Rolland, associate professor of quantitative wildlife ecology, College of Sciences and Mathematics, was named recipient of the Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching.

Rolland, who came to A-State in 2011, earned her doctoral degree at the University of Paris VI.

Excellence in Advising Award: Dr. Sarah Scott

Dr. Sarah Scott, assistant professor of communication studies, College of Liberal Arts and Communication, was recognized as recipient of the Faculty Achievement Award for Advising for 2019-20.

Scott joined A-State’s faculty in 2008, and completed her doctoral degree at the University of Memphis.

Excellence in Scholarship Award: Dr. Richard Segall

Dr. Richard Segall, professor of computer information technology, Neil Griffin College of Business, received the Faculty Achievement Award for Scholarship.

Segall, who joined the faculty in 1998, completed his doctoral degree at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Excellence in Professional Service Award: Dr. Karen Yanowitz

Dr. Karen Yanowitz, professor of psychology, College of Education and Behavioral Science, was introduced as winner of the Faculty Achievement Award for Professional Service.

A faculty member since 1996, she completed her doctoral degree at the University of Massachusetts.

Other faculty nominees for the respective awards were:

Advising: Dr. Julie Lamb-Milligan, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, and Dr. Stacey Sloas, College of Nursing and Health Professions.

Professional Service: Dr. David Jeong, College of Engineering and Computer Science, Dr. Katherine Baker, College of Liberal Arts and Communication, Dr. Christine Wright, College of Nursing and Health Professions, and Dr. Karen McDaniel, Neil Griffin College of Business.

Scholarship: Dr. Cameron Wimpy, College of Liberal Arts and Communication, and Dr. Than Boves, College of Sciences and Mathematics.

Teaching: Dr. Ryan Kelly, College of Education and Behavioral Science, and Amber Wooten, College of Nursing and Health Professions.

The presentation had been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.  Normally the awards are announced at the annual Faculty Honors Convocation during the spring semester.
