JONESBORO, Ark. (1/8/23) – Arkansas State women’s tennis head coach Sujay Lama announced Monday that Jonesboro native and Michigan State tennis standout Emily Metcalf Owen has joined the program as an assistant coach.

“We are super excited to have Emily join our coaching staff and tennis family,” said Lama. “She was a stand-out junior player and went on to have a stellar collegiate career. She brings tremendous knowledge and experience that will be highly beneficial for our program. Her passion for A-State and Jonesboro is a bonus as well as contagious.”

Metcalf Owen played four seasons at Michigan State and finished up as the fifth-most winningest doubles player in program history with 60 doubles wins to her credit. Playing primarily in the No. 1 doubles spot, she ranked as high as 14th nationally and competed at the ITA All-American Doubles Championships. She played primarily in the No. 3 or No. 4 singles position and rose as high as No. 98 in singles rankings.

“I am thrilled to be joining the A-State tennis program alongside Coach Lama and Coach Mordecai,” said Metcalf Owen. “Having grown up witnessing the Red Wolves’ competitive spirit and forging connections with former players, coupled with my recent graduation from A-State, this opportunity is truly special to me. Coach Lama and Coach Mordecai have a clear vision for building the future of A-State Tennis, and I am excited to contribute toward realizing that vision.”

A stand-out junior player from Jonesboro, Metcalf Owen was a four-year letterwinner at Valley View High School. She earned all-conference and all-state honors on her way to four consecutive state singles championships and was named overall high school champion in Arkansas in 2013 and 2014.

She earned her MBA from Arkansas State in December 2022.
