Congress Designates November as Hip-Hop History Month

November 12, 2021

In July 2021, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Congressman Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) co-sponsored resolution 331. The bill passed unanimously this month making November the recognized hip hop history month, August Hip Hop Recognition Month, and Aug. 11 Hip Hop Celebration Day.

Both Waters and Bowman have spoken to the influence that the genre has had over American music and popular culture since it’s birth in the 1970’s. In response to the Bill, the Universal Hip Hop Museum launched a month long campaign called “Know Ya Hip Hop” as a call to the public to educate itself on hip-hop and its cultural history.
