
JONESBORO, Ark. (3/23/22) – Arkansas State’s track and field teams are set for a busy week of competition, with action spread across three meets in two different states beginning Thursday.
Four athletes begin the week for A-State at the 94th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, with another competing nearby at the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos. Action in Austin is set to be broadcasted live on the Longhorn Network.
On Thursday, Bradley Jelmert will compete against some of the nation’s best in the men’s pole vault at 2:30 p.m. in Austin. Friday will see hurdlers Rainee Bowers and Ke’Von Holder competing simultaneously in the 100m hurdles and 110m hurdles, respectively, with both straightaways being utilized during sprints and sprint hurdles events.
Carter Shell will close out the weekend in Austin, competing in the men’s long jump at 3 p.m. Saturday. In San Marcos, Allie Hensley will jump in the women’s high jump at approximately Noon CT.
While five are competing in Texas, the rest of the squad is set to participate in the Ole Miss Classic, held Friday and Saturday in Oxford, Miss.
3 THINGS TO NOTE:
1. PALMA SIMO TABBED MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Arkansas State thrower Aimar Palma Simo earned the first Sun Belt Conference weekly honor of the outdoor season on Wednesday, being named the Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. Palma Simo finished as the top collegian and second overall in the men’s hammer throw on Saturday with a toss of 64.94m (213-0.0).
2. RAMPING UP THE COMPETITION: This weekend will see an uptick in the competition, starting with the ultra-competitive Texas Relays, which always features the top collegiate athletes in the nation in all divisions.
3. NOT MY FIRST RODEO: This weekend marks the first outdoor action for most of A-State’s track and field squads, although several competed in the Louisiana Classics and at the Rhodes Invitational this past weekend.
