Bradbury Art Museum hosts exhibition from Arkansas Arts Center Collection

July 3, 2019

07/03/2019

JONESBORO – “Height X Width X Depth: Sculpture from the Arkansas Arts Center Foundation Collection” will be on view in Bradbury Art Museum at Arkansas State University beginning Thursday, July 11. This extraordinary collection of work was curated by outgoing BAM director, Les Christensen.

The exhibition, shown in two of BAM’s six galleries, highlights 15 works of three-dimensional art from the Arkansas Arts Center (AAC) Foundation collection.

“Perhaps best known for their extensive accumulation of works on paper, this exhibition makes evident the depth of the AAC collection,” Christensen stated.

The first gallery features eight well-known modern and contemporary artists. Included is a bronze bust by celebrated artist Auguste Rodin, a monumental wooden assemblage by legendary sculptor Louise Nevelson, and a cast bronze relief by British artist Henry Moore.

Also on display is a finely carved wooden work by Robyn Horn, an abstract carving from Mark Lindquist, a ceramic wall piece by Japanese artist Jun Kaneko, a small stone carving by folk artist William Edmondson, and a vessel by Peter Voulkos, whose ceramic work is best known for crossing the line between craft and fine art.

In Vaughn Gallery, the work of seven contemporary artists can be seen. All of the artworks in this space are figurative or representative of the human form or face. On one end of the gallery sits an enormous but delicate ceramic female figure by Peter VandenBerge, who stares down, on the opposite side of the room, an immense and intricately inlaid male bust by Michael Ferris Jr.

This gallery also features a carved wooden sculpture by artist Jerry Casebier, as well as ceramic works by Akio Takamori, Curt LaCross and Michael Gross, along with an exquisitely beaded figure by Joyce J. Scott.

“We are very excited to bring in these significant sculptural works, especially in light of the fact the university will soon be breaking ground for the new Windgate Center for Three Dimensional Arts,” Christensen added.  “Having noteworthy artworks of this sort available for our students for an extended period of time is really important. The inspiration they will provide is invaluable.”

This exhibition will be available to the public for the next two years during the extensive renovations of the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, scheduled for completion in early 2022. According to Laine Harber, interim director and CFO of the Arkansas Arts Center, “The project will result in a comprehensive re-envisioning of the AAC by renowned architect Jeanne Gang and her practice, Studio Gang.”

Also on view in three separate galleries at BAM is “A Notational Guide to the Universe,” an exhibition curated by David S. Rubin of paintings by Cuban-American artist David ‘LEBO’ Le Batard. This exhibition will be on view through Sept. 11, according to new BAM director Jacqueline Brightwell.

BAM summer hours, which run through Aug. 16, are noon to 7 p.m. Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. Friday, and by appointment.

Regular museum hours which return Tuesday, Aug. 20, are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, noon to 7 p.m. Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, and by appointment. The museum is closed on Monday and when the university is not in session.

The exhibitions are admission-free and open to the public. For more details, one may visit BradburyArtMuseum.org or contact the museum at (870) 972-3471.
