Boozman Leads Call to Unilever to End Ben & Jerry’s BDS Efforts

Written by Press Release

October 25, 2021

WASHINGTON—Ranking Member John Boozman (R-AR) and a coalition of Republican members of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry are calling on Unilever, as parent company of Ben & Jerry’s, to end the ice cream maker’s Boycott, Divest and Sanction (BDS) efforts against Israel.

Ben & Jerry’s recently announced that it would not renew the contract it has with its Israeli licensee who refused to consent to the ice cream maker’s demands to stop selling its products in the West Bank and parts of East Jerusalem. The company followed through with this threat despite knowing the licensee could not agree to such stipulations without violating Israeli law.

“As strong supporters of Israel, we believe the actions taken by Ben & Jerry’s are an effort to advance the Boycott, Divest, and Sanction (BDS) movement against Israel. We oppose the BDS movement and believe it is important for the United States to combat the movement as a number of countries have sought to isolate Israel, our sole democratic ally in the Middle East, through BDS actions,” Boozman and his colleagues wrote in a letter to Unilever CEO Alan Jope urging him to take action.

The letter to Jope makes it clear that Unilever has the ability to prevent its subsidiary from moving forward with this harmful decision, and urges him to use that authority. Boozman and his colleagues noted that many states have passed anti-BDS legislation, which puts the company at risk of losing investors if Unilever allows Ben & Jerry’s to let the contract lapse.

“We find Ben & Jerry’s actions to be concerning, however it is our understanding that under Unilever’s acquisition agreement, you are able to override this misguided decision. With a number of states around the country having passed anti-BDS legislation, it has been reported that several states have been moving closer to divesting from Unilever. We strongly urge you to use your authority to reverse Ben & Jerry’s decision,” the senators continued.

Along with Boozman, the letter was signed by Senators Roger Marshall (R-KS), John Thune (R-SD), John Hoeven (R-ND), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Mike Braun (R-IN).
