LEADING OFF

  • The Red Wolves are entering the weekend series after 2-1 series win over Southland opponent Stephen F. Austin.
  • In the three-game, season opening series vs. SFA, Arkansas State played error-free baseball for the first time since ULM in 2016 (Apr. 22-24).
  • Arkansas State dropped the season opening contest (Feb. 14) against the Lumberjacks 3-2.
  • Saturday’s matchup against the Lumberjacks included a stellar performance from senior Zach Jackson, on the mound and the Red Wolves’ new look infield.
  • Jackson (1-0) finished his first start of the season with seven strikeouts and only one walk.  In relief, Stone struck out one of the seven batters he faced, in his second appearance of the 2020 campaign.
  • Sunday’s rubber match (8-4) saw the first go-ahead grand slam of the year for the Red Wolves as junior Jaylon Deshazier launch one out of the park in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Chandler Coates (1-0) registered a quality start for the Red Wolves as he worked 7.0 shutout innings in his first start of the season for, scattering five hits and walking one to go along with five strikeouts to earn the win.
  • Newcomer, Liam Hicks punched in a dominant performance in the weekend series against SFA as he registered two home runs, three RBI and scored three times.
  • Newcomer, Ben Klutts made noise for Arkansas State in its opening weekend as he gave A-State early momentum with a solo home run shot in the first inning of the Red Wolves 3-0 win over SFA (Feb. 15).
  • The Red Wolves mid-week matchup against Ole Miss was rescheduled to April 28 at 6:30 p.m. due to bad weather in Oxford.

AT THE SANDLOT

  • A-State trails the all-time series with New Orleans 27-50. The first matchup occurred during the 1974 season when the team traveled to the New Orleans Tournament.
  • Arkansas State also faced Illinois State and Notre Dame at the event, but lost to the Privateers 19-0 in their lone matchup. That game was the only one of the 74 contests the two teams played as nonconference opponents.
  • A-State didn’t win a game against the Privateers until the 1990 season when the Red Wolves took a 3-1 decision in Jonesboro with losses in the other two games of the series.
  • A-State was 1-12 against UNO while both were members of the ASC from 1988-1991 with one loss coming in the conference tournament.
  • From 1992-2010 the two teams were members of the Sun Belt and played at least once each season except for the 1993 campaign. Over that time frame A-State is 24-36 against UNO, including a 3-4 mark in the SBC Tournament.
  • Head coach Tommy Raffo is 6-3 against New Orleans all-time with three-game series played in each of his first two seasons (2009 and 2010) when UNO was still a member of the Sun Belt Conference. A-State lost two of three during the 2009 campaign at New Orleans before sweeping the Privateers in New Orleans in 2010 by scores of 14-6, 7-6, and 17-3.
  • UNO?is now in the Southland Conference and is currently 1-3 on the year with its lone win coming from Prairie View A&M.
